Chatelain's highly idiosyncratic abstract paintings, replete with an array of imagery cultivated from his years in metro Detroit; New York City; Findlay, Ohio; and upstate New York, combine to form a truly singular vision.
Jim Chatelain has had over 20 solo exhibitions in metro Detroit during his extensive career and his work is included in the permanent collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Wayne State University. It is also included in many noted private collections. In 2003, Center Galleries, College for Creative Studies, Detroit, presented a survey exhibition of artist's work. For the accompanying brochure, Glen Mannisto stated, "...Jim Chatelain came to an artistic practice that at the time few people would have considered remarkable, but which in retrospect seems visionary." His new work is no less visionary.
